What is SMS? In under 100 words

SMS stands for Short Message Service, it has until recently (overtaken by WhatsApp) been the most widely used data application allowing 87% of the world’s population to communicate via mobile for over 20 years.

Only 160 7-bit characters (all Latin based languages use this) can be included in a single SMS. If a longer SMS is sent, the message will be segmented and each message will start with a UDH (User Data Header) which uses part of the payload. This reduces the size of the SMS to 153 7-bit characters.

What is an SMSC? In less than 150 words

Once messages are deployed to your recipients they are sent to a Short Message Service Centre (SMSC), which provides a “store and forward” mechanism.

It attempts to send messages to the SMSC's recipients. If a recipient is not reachable, the SMSC queues the message for later retry. Both mobile terminated (MT, for messages sent to a mobile handset) and mobile originating (MO, for those sent from the mobile handset) operations are supported.

Criminals rob Windows XP cash machines via SMS

Cyber-attackers have developed a technique for robbing ATMs of cash using a piece of code that can be activated simply by sending a text message, according to security firm Symantec.  The technique targets a particular brand of ATM that Symantec didn’t identify, but the company warned that such techniques are part of a wider problem.
